Project story

Chevron Mosaic Fireplace Surround & Hearth

A new mosaic finish added around a previously untiled fireplace opening and across the hearth. Repeating chevrons in soft gray, beige and cream tones bring a detailed pattern between the black fireplace frame and white outer surround.

Before & after

Before

An untiled fireplace area

There was no tile around the fireplace. The project introduced a mosaic finish to frame the opening and continue onto the hearth.

After

Chevron mosaic connects the vertical surround with the horizontal hearth, adding pattern and soft color around the fireplace.

What changed

New mosaic gives the fireplace a patterned border and a coordinated hearth finish. The tile runs across the band above the opening, down both sides and onto the surface in front of it.

Light grout separates the individual pieces, while the chevron layout brings movement to the gray and beige tones. The black fireplace frame, white outer surround and wood floor edging provide the boundaries of the finished tilework.

  • Mosaic added to a previously untiled fireplace area.
  • Repeating chevron pattern above and beside the opening.
  • Coordinated mosaic finish across the hearth.
  • Tile layout fitted to the fireplace frame and outer trim.
  • Light grout defining the pattern and individual pieces.

The work, step by step

From an untiled fireplace area to a coordinated mosaic surround and hearth, the work centers on the pattern, its fit around the opening and the finished joints.

Stage 01

The starting point: an untiled fireplace area

The area around the fireplace had no tile before this project. The scope was to introduce a mosaic finish around the opening and bring that pattern onto the hearth in front of it.

The tilework became the focus of the update: a detailed surface between the black fireplace frame and the surrounding white trim, with a matching finish at floor level.

Stage 02

Chevron layout & mosaic installation

The mosaic forms repeating chevron columns in soft gray, beige and cream tones. The layout continues above the fireplace opening and down both sides, creating a consistent patterned border.

The installation brings the pattern onto the hearth and fits it to the edges of the fireplace frame and surrounding trim. The changes in direction and the boundaries of the tiled areas give the small pieces a clear, ordered composition.

Stage 03

Grout lines & the completed tilework

Light grout defines the individual pieces and makes the chevron pattern easy to read across the vertical surround and horizontal hearth. The variation in the mosaic adds texture without a strong contrast against the white framing.

The completed photograph shows the tilework meeting the black fireplace frame, white outer surround and wood floor edging. Those adjoining elements frame the new mosaic and connect the fireplace finish with the room.

One mosaic pattern, from the surround to the hearth

The chevron pattern connects the face of the fireplace with the tiled surface below. Soft colors and light joints add detail within the white surround, giving the fireplace a more finished focal point.
